In order to be prepared for the challenges of the twenty-first century, all students are encouraged to take and pass a minimum of three years of a second language. Students must pass the third year LOTE comprehensive examination in order to receive an Advanced Regents Endorsed Diploma and earn six (6) LOTE credits.
Languages offered include:
Chinese: Native and Heritage classes level 1 to A.P.
French: Level 1 to AP
Italian: Level 1 to AP and accelerated courses
Russian: Native and Heritage classes level 1 to A.P.
Spanish: Level 1 to AP and Native\ Speaker Classes. AP Language, AP Literature
 
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
  • To obtain an advanced Regents diploma, students are required to take three years of a world language and receive a grade of 65 or higher on the LOTE exam in that language.
 INCOMING STUDENTS
 Students who enter Murrow having passed the SLP and wish to continue studying the language will be placed in level II.  If a student has a high level of proficiency in a particular language s/he must be assessed for placement.
  1. Begin a new language (French, Italian or Spanish)
  2. Continue studying the language they have studied in Middle School.
 
 Students may list a preferred language choices for language classes on the course selection sheet. The program office makes every attempt to honor the request however when seats are no longer available in a student’s first choice a lottery system is used for placement.  
  • Students who enter E. R. Murrow having passed the middle school SLP will be awarded one year of credit in a language. After completing Level II and III and passing the appropriate Regents/LOTE exam, those students may opt to take an additional year in the language to receive college credit through A.P. courses or St. John’s University College Advantage Program (fees apply).
  • Heritage or native speakers of Chinese, Spanish or Russian will take a placement assessment in June.
Placement is based on availability, performance and programming restrictions.

 English Language Learners must meet all graduation requirements including passing the ELA Regents Examination.  ELLs who score below Commanding (formerly Proficient) on the NYSITELL or the NYSESLAT are entitled to Bilingual/ESL services until they score Commanding or score Expanding and pass the ELA Regents examination. Parent Program Selection Forms must be completed and filed with the ESL Coordinator, RoseMary Iervasi.  Students may not withdraw from a mandated ENL program.  All ENL/NLA classes are aligned to the NYS Common Core Standards.
